MONTMARTRE

LA BONNE FRANQUETTE where Vincent Van Gogh painted his famous painting “La Guinguette”

La Bonne Franquette was at the end of the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century an artists’ rendezvous: Pissarro, Sisley, Cézanne, Toulouse-Lautrec, Renoir, Monet, Zola … sat thirsty under the arbors of the garden after the ascent of the Butte … Their artist’s neighbors were also Suzanne Valadon and Utrillo, installed in 1896 at the corner of the Rue des Saules and rue Cortot, close to Aristide Bruant. And the famous merchant for painters, Father Tanguy, walked up from Rue Clauzel to meet the artists. Vincent Van Gogh, who lived at 54 rue Lepic with his brother Théo, painted in 1886 his famous painting “La Guinguette”, in the dark tones of the style of his first work close to the ones of the Netherlands and Brussels. This painting belongs to the group of works made between 1886 and 1887 of the “paintings of Montmartre”, which he preferred the pastoral atmosphere to that of the urban scenes of Paris.
