CAPELLA Ubud, Bali pays Tribute to the Spirit of Adventures of The First European Settlers from the Early 1800s

Bensley Capella BALI

Capella Ubud, Bali brings a new definition to the jungle experience with the opening of its ultra-luxurious tented camp in the second quarter of 2018. A true rainforest camp, nestled within lush forest terrain and sloping rice terraces, is brought to life by celebrated architect Bill Bensley.

Bensley Capella BALI

Global sensation, interior designer, landscape architect, explorer and lover of all things natural, Bill Bensley has been designing some of the world’s most iconic hotels, resorts, spas and palaces, since 1989. A Harvard graduate in urban design, Bensley sets his base in Bangkok and Bali, where the BENSLEY design studio, an atelier of architects, interior designers, artists and landscape architects, is responsible for the design of over 200 hotels and resorts in more than 30 countries. Voted King of Exotic Luxury Resorts and one of the Top 100 Designers in the World by the prestigious ‘Time’ and ‘Architectural Digest’ magazines, Bensley and his team are considered leaders in the field of hospitality design.

Inspired by the first Europeans settlers in Bali in the early 1800s, Bensley created this sensational tented camp in tribute to their spirit of adventure. His design scheme for this jungle sanctuary takes its cue from the colonial décor brought to Bali by the European settlers, combining that aesthetic with local touches.

Bill Bensley says: “I love to design hotels in interesting and remote locations around the world to celebrate local heritage whilst creating something new and unique. This requires a deep understanding of the fabric that holds a society together. When I start a new project, I love to visit places of worship, which is usually of paramount importance for all communities. Capella Ubud, Bali being based in Bali, represents a special and personal challenge for me.”

Beautifully constructed against a dramatic backdrop of lush greenery and terraced landscapes, each of the 22 one-bedroom tents and the two-bedroom lodge feature salt water pools, large outdoor decks and indoor and outdoor bathrooms. The retreat interiors carry a bespoke design theme based on the characters and professions of the early explorers, such as Captain, Naturalist, Cartographer, Translator, Toy Maker and Story Teller – a unique way to bring Bali’s exotic past back to life.

All the tents, the lodge and some of the public areas are adorned with valuable antique art objects and furniture, some of which are from the owner’s treasured private collection. Bensley took careful consideration in putting the finishing touches to the tented camp, successfully integrating traditional Balinese architectural elements including antique local style bed frames in some of the retreats, carved wooden doors and entrance gates, suspension bridges and Balinese ‘poleng’ and ‘ikat’ linens.

Sensitivity to Ubud’s densely forested terrain is a top priority. All the tents and the lodge have been carefully designed with respect for their natural surroundings. Not a single tree was cut during the construction of the camp, keeping it a hidden sanctuary from afar and capturing the imagination of those looking for a truly unique experience. The orientation of the tents and the lodge maximizes the views of the jungle, river and rice terrace settings, encouraging natural light and the flow of cooling fresh air circulation.

The Culinary Tent is home to the camp’s dining room Mads Lange, Asian street food barbecue at Api Jiwa, The Camp Fire for pulled hot chocolate and toasted marshmallows under the stars with a local storyteller, the Mortar and Pestle that offers light poolside snacks and a wide range of cocktails and potions, inclusive of health-conscious options.

Inspired by the influence of the surrounding jungle setting, three Auriga Wellness tents artfully link the indoors and outdoors to enjoy the best of both worlds. These peaceful sanctuaries, with stunning views all round, create a tranquil environment for spa lovers to relax and unwind, setting the tone for a perfect sense of wellbeing.

The Armory, a name derived from the early European settlers’ term for a storage room used for weapons used on their expeditions, is the camp’s tented gymnasium, which is home to the state of the art line up of work-out equipment and a barre for barre-based classes. The Officer’s Tent, the camp’s living room and library exclusively reserved for camp residents, recalls the bygone era of the officer’s mess serving morning coffee, afternoon tea, cocktails and canapés and after dinner drinks.

The camp’s main swimming pool, The Cistern, offers a magnificent 360-degree panoramic view of the Keliki Valley. It is named after the water reservoir found in the camp site of yesteryear. Formed in the shape of a rainwater reservoir, the pool is made of marine grade steel plates each weighing 100 kilos. Due to the land terracing, each slab of steel plate had to be transported and carried by hand to the site.

The tents are available in four colour schemes. Each is styled with an inspirational theme that depicts the skill set of the various camp personnel in the early days of the 1800s:

The Captain’s Tent The Explorer’s Tent The Carpenter’s Tent The Naturalist’s Tent

The Cartographer’s Tent The Translator’s Tent The Princess’ Tent
