TRANSPARANT – Muziek Theater – Antwerp (Belgium)

Muziektheater Transparant is a Flemish theatre company founded in 1994. They play musical theatre, their own versions of opera. The artistic directors are Guy Coolen and Wouter Van Looy.

Muziektheater Transparant is celebrating its 25th birthday. In the past quarter of a century, we have grown into a music-theatre production company that operates internationally. We show the undiminished power of the singing voice and offer our many makers and artists a committed view of repertoire. Together with all of you, we explore the exciting relationships between music, word, and image, and this is a common thread in our productions in the 2019 – 2020 season. Consider the relationship between past and present. Our in-house composer, Annelies Van Parys, has written new music for Usher – a beautiful, unfinished work by Claude Debussy, based on a dark story by Edgar Allan Poe. In The Valley, a controversial collaboration between Hans Op de Beeck and Eric Sleichim (BL!NDMAN), contemporary apocalyptic visions echo in a remake of work by Renaissance composer Josquin Des Prez. With B’Rock Orchestra we are creating Songs of Nature, a contemplative performance about nature, man, destruction and beauty around the Neun Deutsche Arien by Georg Friedrich Händel and new music by Wim Henderickx.

Mutual relations between people are also a point of focus. In PASSIO, with
Alessandro Scarlatti’s St John Passion as the central work, director Luigi De Angelis wonders how we view other people’s suffering. Tom Goossens, one of our new makers, brings with Le Nozze a bold re-translation of Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro, perhaps the most famous relationship opera ever. Last but not least, the fabulous four who created Les Âmes Perdues and director Wouter van Looy are making Every Ending, a music-theatre performance based on Heiner Müller’s adaptation of Les Liaisons Dangereuses.

TRANSLAB, our focus on new makers and artists, is again in full swing, with various Conservatory projects and residences at our Matterhorn workplace in Borgerhout. You can read all about it in this brochure. The Muziektheater Transparant team wishes you an inspiring season.
